STMicroelectronics CAN FD Light Multi-Pixel Driver Enables Next-Generation Automotive Lighting Designs

October 14, 2022, China – ST’s L99LDLH32 linear current regulator provides an easy and integrated solution for controlling dynamic automotive lighting using the lightweight CAN FD Light protocol. OLED lamps emit bright, uniform and high-contrast light from very small surfaces, and the new drivers are a perfect match for OLEDs, allowing designers to create complex patterns and light effects that enhance the safety and exterior design visuals of cars.

The L99LDLH32 has 32 regulated current supplies that can be independently programmed in the range of 1mA to 15mA, which can independently drive each pixel of the interior and exterior lamps of the car, and also provides an overall dimming function with 8-bit resolution. When powered by vehicle battery voltage, the driver has a maximum output voltage of 35V, covering a wide emitter forward voltage range.

The on-chip CAN FD Light protocol processor and transceiver simplifies the connection of the current regulator chip to the vehicle communication infrastructure and control domain electronic control unit ECUs. CAN FD Light's controller/transponder synchronous communication is based on established industry standards for controlling simple devices such as lamps and sensors, saving expensive external components such as timing crystals. On the other hand, the 1Mbit/s data bandwidth enables designers to create complex animation patterns, modulating smooth light-dark transitions and dimming effects.

In addition, the on-chip memory unit allows setting of independently operating amperage and PWM dimming parameters, providing a fail-safe for the system in the event of a functional failure of the communication bus or controller. Target applications for the L99LDLH32 include safety-critical lighting such as tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, etc., providing the functions required for high functional safety, including fault status pins, voltage monitors, temperature monitors, programmable timeout watchdog, As well as short and open load detection. In addition, frequency dithering technology minimizes electromagnetic radiation.

Using STMicroelectronics' BCD9sL process, the L99LDLH32 is a monolithic integrated solution that is AEC-Q100 qualified. Users can order in the ST eStore online store. The package is a 7mm x 7mm QFN48 with wettable sides and exposed thermal pads to aid heat dissipation. For inquiries and to order samples, please contact your local STMicroelectronics sales office.
